Maria Woodford

Her Music soothes the savage beast and lights our path to tolerance.

Singer-songwriter, Maria Woodford brings together the grit of the blues, the storytelling of folk, and the improvisation of jazz in music that feels both timeless and personal. Emerging from the 1990s anti-folk scene, Woodford has built a reputation for emotionally resonant performances and for surrounding herself with inventive, accomplished players.

With her soul-reaching voice, thoughtful songwriting, and dynamic live presence, Maria Woodford creates a live experience that’s both intimate and full of energy. Audiences can expect an evening of music that bridges genres and speaks directly to the heart.

Maria is a 3rd place winner in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for her song, "Travellin' On", a semi-finalist in the International Blues Competition, a Jim Beam Grant Recipient, and has the honor of being the first, and one of only two, artists to be granted mechanical rights to Nina Simone's "Do I Move You" which is given only to those artists hand picked by Nina Simone's daughter according to how well their rendition honors the original meaning of the song.

Artist: This original block print was gifted to Maria at Connexions Art Gallery in Easton, PA, by Lehigh Valley Artist, Bob Craig.  In a personal note, the artist shared that while he felt he had not captured Maria's beauty, he had captured her spirit.  Maria believes that her spirit is her beauty, and that this piece captures her truth.  This print is her favorite likeness of all those created by various artists over the decades.  It hangs prominently in her writing room as a reminder of her mission and purpose in this world.

A gritty, soul-stirring tribute to blues in its rawest form, Bad Dog Blues is Maria Woodford’s unapologetically powerful 2012 album. Rooted in raw emotion and steeped in tradition, the album blends sultry vocals with fierce vulnerability, honoring the heart of blues while creating a space all her own in a genre that embodies the art of transmuting pain into passion.

At the center of the record is the unforgettable title track, “Bad Dog Blues,” featuring Phil Wiggins, National Heritage Fellow and one of the most celebrated blues harmonica players of our time. Phil’s driving, soulful playing adds a depth and authenticity that elevates the track—and the entire album—into blues history.

But Bad Dog Blues doesn’t stop there.

Among its 11 tracks is Maria’s stirring rendition of Nina Simone’s “Do I Move You?”—a cover so deeply felt that it caught the attention of Nina Simone’s daughter. After hearing Maria’s take, she granted her the rights to release it, saying:

“You understand this song the way my mother meant it to be understood.”

Maria was the first of only two artists ever permitted to cover "Do I Move You" formally.

Bad Dog Blues is a love letter to authenticity, to pain transmuted through art, to grit with grace. It’s where lust meets loneliness, where memory meets movement, and where every track begs the question:

“Do I move you?”
